ABOUT THE RETREAT

The Huachuma Project has been created as a permanent home for this work in Southern Portugal. Set within a quiet off-grid valley surrounded by nature, the retreat centre has been developed over many years to provide a grounded environment for ceremony, reflection and integration.

Our three-night format gives you time to arrive, settle into the land, participate in two ceremonies and begin integrating your experience before returning home.

The schedule is intentionally spacious. We do not try to fill every hour with activities. Time to rest, walk, reflect, talk, sit quietly or simply be on the land is an important part of the retreat.

We believe meaningful retreat experiences are shaped by the medicine, the people who gather around it, the environment and the care with which the space is held.

EVERY RETREAT BEGINS WITH A CONVERSATION

We do not see Huachuma as an experience to book impulsively. Before your place is confirmed, we want to understand what is bringing you to this work, answer your questions and explore whether the retreat feels appropriate for you and for the group.

We do not accept every person who enquires. Our priority is not to fill every available space. It is to bring together people who feel genuinely ready for the work and who understand the responsibility involved in joining a shared ceremonial environment.

Participation is subject to our screening, intake and consent process. If we both feel the retreat is the right next step, we will guide you through preparation before welcoming you to Portugal.

WHO THIS RETREAT IS FOR

Our retreats are suited to people who feel genuinely drawn to Huachuma and are willing to engage honestly with their own process.

You may be:

• Moving through a period of change or transition
• Looking for greater clarity around your life, relationships or direction
• Wanting to understand recurring patterns more deeply
• Seeking time away from the noise and pace of everyday life
• Feeling disconnected from yourself or the natural world
• Already experienced with plant medicine and looking for a grounded setting for further work
• Simply feeling a sincere call towards Huachuma that you want to explore carefully

You do not need to arrive with everything figured out. What matters is sincerity, respect and a willingness to meet yourself honestly. This is not a recreational experience, a quick fix or something we believe can do the work of life for you.

Huachuma may offer perspective and insight. What you choose to do with those insights afterwards remains your responsibility.

THE CEREMONIES

The retreat includes two extended Huachuma ceremonies, giving the experience time and space to unfold without being rushed.

Ceremonies are held within our dedicated ceremony yurt and the surrounding land, depending on the needs of the group and conditions on the day.

Austin and the facilitation team remain present and attentive throughout. Our role is not to direct your experience or tell you what you should discover. We focus on creating a calm, clear and respectful container where you can engage with your own process while knowing support is available whenever it is needed.

There is no expectation to have a particular kind of experience and no pressure to perform emotionally or spiritually.

YOUR FACILITATOR

The retreat is led by Austin Romero, founder and lead facilitator of The Huachuma Project. Austin began working with plant medicines in 2015 and has focused deeply on Huachuma since 2018. His approach has developed through years of personal work, ceremony, facilitation, study and learning alongside experienced elders, teachers and practitioners.

Austin’s style is direct, grounded and personal. He values honesty, clear boundaries, personal responsibility and giving people enough space to meet their own experience.

The Huachuma Project has grown from his belief that this work deserves a permanent home where preparation, ceremony, environment and integration receive equal attention.

OUR HOME IN THE ALGARVE

The Huachuma Project is located in a secluded off-grid valley in the Western Algarve. Surrounded by more than 100 acres of nature, the land offers the feeling of stepping away from everyday life while remaining accessible from Faro, Lisbon and the rest of Europe.

The retreat centre has developed gradually over many years. Our ceremony yurt, accommodation, communal areas and quiet spaces have all been created around the way we believe this work should be held.

For us, the environment is part of the retreat. Time outside, quiet mornings, open skies, walking through the valley and simply having space away from everyday demands can be as valuable as the more structured parts of the programme.

This information helps us understand whether participation is appropriate and allows us to hold the retreat responsibly for everyone involved.

A €250 deposit is required to secure your place. Your booking is confirmed once the deposit has been received and your intake and screening process has been completed.

• Used as credit towards another person’s participation

Personal Emergencies & Travel Disruption

If you are unable to attend because of illness, a family emergency, significant travel disruption or an airline issue, you may move your booking to another available retreat using the same deposit. Please contact us as early as possible if your circumstances change.

Non-Attendance

If you do not attend the retreat and have not communicated with us beforehand, your deposit will be forfeited. The same applies if you are unable to travel because your passport, visa, or other required travel documents have expired or are invalid.

Events Outside Your Control

If travel is prevented by global, political, natural, geological or pandemic-related restrictions, your deposit will remain valid for six months after the relevant restriction or event has ended.

Once the Retreat Has Begun

If you decide not to participate in all or part of the retreat after arrival, your accommodation and retreat location remain reserved for the duration of your stay. For this reason, refunds are not available once the retreat has begun.

We encourage guests to communicate with us whenever circumstances change. Where possible, we would rather help you move your retreat than lose the opportunity to join us altogether.

READY TO BEGIN?

Our retreats are limited to 12 participants. If you feel genuinely called to work with Huachuma and the way we approach this work resonates with you, begin by sending us a message through Retreat Guru.

Every retreat starts the same way: with a conversation.
